Suru Boulder Fest 2016 – Climbing Party @12000ft
Organized in the Suru valley in the Ladakh region, the Suru Boulder Fest was first of its kind in the arena of bouldering in India. Pirmin Bertle (Swiss climber) discovered and sent India’s hardest boulder problem called Bacteria(8b+) in Suru valley in 2015.
A moonscape with a plethora of boulders to climb, Suru Valley, like Hampi, is a perfect destination for rock climbing in India. With so much of unharnessed potential, a collective called Terranava and GraviT boulder café along with similarly oriented entities, came forward to put the name of the place on the map and thus, Suru Boulder Fest came into being. It was an initiative to explore untouched bouldering destinations in India, provide livelihood to the local community, and to conserve the ecology as many of the rocks were being smashed to pieces by locals to build homes or to cultivate land.
The festival saw around fifty participants from about eight different countries. It included some of the good climbers from India and abroad. Go on for some mountain trekking or just put on your bouldering shoe and climb, that is all one had to do in Suru to get the best out of their day!
This short film brings out opposing perspectives of climbers and the local community towards rocks. For the former, it is a treasure and for the latter, they are just encumbrances. The film, along with portraying the merrymaking and some power packed climbing, showcases the transition of the local community’s attitude and perception as they get introduced to a new way of living.
